What are probiotics?

  • Probiotics are live, naturally occurring, beneficial microorganisms which live in and on our bodies and are crucial to our overall health and wellbeing.
  • Probiotics are an essential part of our microbiome, the complex ecosystem residing in our bodies responsible for digestive function and nutrient absorption, as well as regulating the immune system and helping to protect us from pathogens.
  • Probiotic supplements are made by isolating the beneficial microbes from food, the digestive tract or breastmilk and may offer health benefits in the gut and whole body.
  • For maximum benefit, it is important that probiotics are taken in adequate amount and are of high quality, and clinically researched.

What are the benefits of taking probiotics?

There are many factors which disrupt the balance of the microbiome which result in symptoms not just within the digestive system itself but on our overall health.

Some of these factors include medications (such as antibiotics), environment, pollution, stress, diet, alcohol intake and other lifestyle habits. For babies, mode of delivery, pregnancy term, antibiotics and breastfeeding outcomes can all influence the microbiome.

Taking high quality and clinically researched probiotics is one way we can maintain and restore our microbiome for optimal health outcomes.

What makes Qiara probiotics different?

Supplemental probiotics are generally isolated from food or gut bacteria. However, the probiotic strain contained in Qiara, Lactobacillus fermentum CECT5716 was originally isolated from breastmilk, which offers unique benefits when taken as a supplement. This includes restoring beneficial flora in the gut (from infancy to adulthood) and breast tissue (in pregnant and/or breastfeeding mothers).

Qiara also has ‘maternal transfer’ properties, meaning the probiotic benefits transfer to a breastfed infant via the breastmilk from the Mother when taking the probiotic.

The probiotic strain found in Qiara has been extensively researched over the past 15 years and is supported by evidence.  You can find clinical reserach on Lactobacillus fermentum CECT5716 here

How is Qiara made?

Manufactured in Australia, Qiara is made from the original breastmilk probiotic strain Lactobacillus fermentum CECT5716 which is protected in a Master Cell Bank, by a process of fermentation.

We are proud to be an Australian-owned, female-led business, helping mums to keep breastfeeding, and supporting the gastrointestinal health of all stages of life.

Qiara - why choose a single strain probiotic vs a multi-strain probiotic.

Containing only a single strain probiotic Lactobacillus fermentum CECT5716, Qiara has been heavily researched and its use and expected outcome is supported by specific clinical trials.

It is difficult to determine how strains of probiotics interact or inhibit each other, and what effect they may have physiologically unless clinical trials on the exact combinations of strains are carried out.

Products claiming ‘broad spectrum’ probiotics which combine multiple strains have rarely been clinically trialled in their exact combinations. As a result, more strains and more ‘billions’ does not necessarily mean a better result. In fact, the strain used in Qiara has been shown to be just as efficacious at lower doses.
